The provision of scheduled air services between Oban and the islands of Coll, Colonsay and Tiree — the designated services — are essential to counter the islands' peripherality, fragile economic base and depopulation of the islands, and to aid social cohesion. There is no rapid alternative means of transport to Oban or any other part of the Scottish mainland. The designated services are essential for the maintenance of the economic and social fabric of the islands. They are to be used for access to essential services (financial, commercial, educational, professional, advisory, health services) which cannot be provided locally; and for the development of tourism. In recognition of the importance of these services, Argyll and Bute Council make a subsidy available for the designated services.Further details of Oban and the Isles Airports and the designated services can be found at the following website: www.obanandtheislesairports.com
