The Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators (SCAPA) is a newly constructed world-class, state-of-the-art suite of laboratories at the University of Strathclyde. It is dedicated to using very high power, short pulse lasers as drivers for ultra-compact particle accelerators (electrons, protons …) and radiation sources (X-rays, gamma rays …) and their applications. Research is focussed on the development and application of next generation accelerator technology. The SCAPA research centre is a major initiative within the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) project.The SCAPA facility consists of 3 radiation shielded areas housing 7 beam lines in a flexible environment for the SUPA, UK and wider user communities. Developing medical, industrial and scientific applications of laser-accelerator technology is at the heart of SCAPA, such as electron and X-ray diffraction, radiation detector development, nuclear medicine, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, medical imaging and molecular biology.The SCAPA laser system will be a series of Titanium: Sapphire amplifiers, pumped by Nd:based frequency doubled laser sources.
